Year 4 2019 - 2020

Mrs Woods

Summer Term - 2019

TOPIC

Our topic this term is ‘Hunted’.  We will be reading, un-picking and studying some of the folk tales from the ‘The Classic tales of Brer Rabbit’.  We will be investigating fictitious tricky tales with crafty characters such as Brer Wolf, Brer Fox and Brer Bear.

WORLD OF WORK – Making things real

In our maths classes we will be focusing on ‘Making things real’. During our ‘Careers and Enterprise Week – Imagine programme!’ we will be looking at money and business finance.  The focus will also be looking at real data / statistics and interpreting bar charts and graphs.  As always, times tables will be at the forefront in all our maths lessons so we will be playing games and putting them into real life situations.

TRIPS AND ACTIVITIES

We have a few trips and activities to look forward to and details will be sent out nearer the time.

However, week commencing Monday 17th June, the year four children will be working with year three on a mini enterprise, as part of the ‘Imagine’ programme.  They will be working in groups of 6 creating a small business, making products and selling them at the market place.  They will get to put their Maths, Art & DT and English skills in action.

The children have also been invited to go to UCLAN in July, where they will participate in some practical experiments surrounding Science, Technology Engineering and Maths.

A further trip relating to ‘Hunted’ is also in the process of being planning and details will be available shortly.

During the first couple of weeks of the summer term, the children will be creating a mini personal ‘Profile of Achievement’ which they will complete with information all about themselves. The focus on this will be to raise the future aspirations and celebrate the personal achievements of the children.  They will get to write their own CV and complete an application form; for a job that they would like in the future!  Finally, they will be writing a newspaper article that focuses on one of the trips they have been on or an Enterprise activity they have been involved in.

SPANISH

Spanish is taught on Monday mornings and the children have been learning how to tell the time and also enjoying finding out all about Mexico!

PE

PE takes place every Wednesday so please ensure all kits are in school ready for the lessons. We continue to benefit from working alongside the School Sports Partnerships and actively encourage this very important aspect of the curriculum.

HOMEWORK

Spellings tests are every Tuesday, so please continue to encourage your child to practice regularly; during the week, at home.  In addition to the spelling tests they will also have to remember a dictated and spell the words correctly within the sentence.

The new ‘creative homework’ is issued at the start of each term.  It focuses on the topics that the children will be studying as part of their curriculum.  The submission date is always written at the top and parents will be invited in the following week.

Thanks so much for your continued support in your child’s learning journey, we really do appreciate all your help and support.  We regularly put things onto Twitter, so please have a look at what they children are doing during the day.

Spring Term - 2019

It’s great to have you all back after Christmas.

We have been sharing our news from the holidays and hearing about special things that we did.

This term’s topic is  ‘THE ART OF FOOD!’

Much of our curriculum work will be taught creatively through this topic.

The texts and inspirational stories we will be using include ‘Sproutboy’ and various other food related resources.

In Science we will be examining our teeth and the digestive system.

For homework we are continuing using Mymaths and this is set every other week.  We will also be focusing on our times tables so they need to be practising regularly.

English written work is set every alternating week to Maths on a Friday. Spellings are set every Tuesday.

Please continue to make use of our wonderful online reading resource ‘Bug Club’.

PE will take place on a Tuesday (fitness) and a Wednesday (Invasion games).  Please ensure all kits are in school ready for the lesson

Thank you again for your continued support and as you can see, we have a busy half term ahead of us.

Autumn Term 2

Our topic this term is ‘The Great Plague’.  We will be reading, un-picking and studying poems and stories relating to the fairy tale ‘The Pied Piper’.  So far, we have looked at a picture of the Pied Piper and predicted what the story might be about.  We are reading the poem verse by verse and understanding the vocabulary and content (as some of the words are rather old-fashioned!) Over the next few weeks we will be writing new stories relating to the theme of the story; and creating new characters and problems to solve!

We are also looking forward to researching the history surrounding the Great Plague and finding out what it was like to live in London before the Great Fire of London.

PE

PE takes place every Wednesday and Friday so please ensure all kits are in school ready for the lessons. We continue to benefit from working alongside the School Sports Partnerships and actively encourage this very important aspect of the curriculum.  This term the focus is on gymnastics.

Homework

Every Friday the children will be set either MyMaths; with Time Tables, or some English written work.  They have their own homework books so please ensure they are back in school, completed, so we can go through the homework as a class. If your child has difficulties accessing the internet please let me know and I can provide paper copies of work.

Spellings tests are every Tuesday, so please continue to encourage your child to practice regularly; during the week, at home.

Santa’s list

The children have been discussing many things they would like for Christmas, which is lovely (as a parent also scary…long lists!)

If you do, however, need any educational ideas, a dictionary would be excellent addition to their bookshelf; especially as they need to be able to locate and describe words using the first 3 letters by the end of year 4.

Another great addition would be an analogue watch as we are covering time and with this being such an important, lifelong skill; would benefit them both at home and at school.

Thanks so much for you continued support in your child’s learning journey we really do appreciate all your help.

If you have any concerns or questions please feel free to contact me.

Autumn Term 2018

Our topics this term is ‘Sparks Might Fly’.  We will be reading, un-picking and studying two fantastic books: ‘The Firework Maker’s Daughter’ and ‘James and the Giant Peach’.  So far, we have built character profiles and written letters, and over the coming weeks we will be looking at Diary entries.

We are also looking forward to reading ‘Until We met Dudley’ alongside the Wallace & Gromit – Cracking Contraptions Manual, as the children will be creating their own inventions and providing instructions on how to operate them. I’m sure they will have some amazing ideas!

In our maths classes we have been focusing on Place Value and some of our ‘Mathletics’ lessons have even taken place in the Hall.  Watch out for Twitter as you often see the children in action.

I have given all the children a ‘Times Tables Booklet’ and we have been having regular tests.  The children have been enjoying doing the Times Tables to ‘BBC Sport Supermovers’. I would really encourage you to help them learn these as they form the foundations to so many aspects of maths.  We are recapping them all and offering greater depth questioning to those children who are excelling at them.

Spanish is taught on Monday mornings and the children have been enjoying dressing up as Aliens and creating their own creatures!

PE takes place every Wednesday and Friday so please ensure all kits are in school ready for the lessons. We continue to benefit from working alongside the School Sports Partnerships and actively encourage this very important aspect of the curriculum.

Homework

Every Friday the children will be set either MyMaths; with Time Tables, or some English written work.  They have their own homework books so please ensure they are back in school, completed, so we can go through the homework as a class.

Spring Term 2018

Our theme this half term is, ‘The Art of Food.’ We will be focusing on the Digestive System and Teeth in Science, Still Life in Art and Design and will also be making topic links with Music and Computing. Please continue to encourage your child to read regularly, either their school reading book, library book or reading online by accessing Bug Club at https://www.activelearnprimary.co.uk. Login details were sent home with your child before Christmas and we can see that many children are engaging well with this fantastic resource.

Autumn Term 2017

We have had a great start to our year in Year 4! We are particularly enjoying reading James and the Giant peach as part of our whole class reading sessions and have had some imaginative ideas about what might happen next in the story.

We are also learning about Electricity in Science and where it can be found in the home. Electrical safety is an important part of this. Look out for our safety posters over the next couple of weeks!
