WELCOME TO YEAR 3!

We wish a warm welcome to all of the children who have started back in Year 3 and can see that they are settling in well. We are so excited for the amazing things we will be learning this term! Your Year 3 teachers are Mrs. Grills and Mrs. Scott and our teaching assistant this year is Mrs Odgers, all of whom are excited to be part of the Year 3 team. Mrs. Woodfield will be teaching RE to the children on Tuesday afternoons too.

Our topic for the first half term is ‘There’s No Place Like Home’, focusing on the history and location of our local area. In the second half term, our topic will be ‘Healthy Humans’, where we will investigate aspects of the human body and how to keep healthy with our diet and nutrition.

READING

Children have many reading opportunities during the school week including Guided Reading and reading individually wherever possible. This term, Year 3 will be reading and writing about a variety of folk tales, will look at biographies as well as Aesop’s Fables by Michael Rosen. Please continue to read regularly at home and encourage your child to discuss their book when reading. Their reading book is taken home each day in their pack and needs to be returned daily into school.

MATHS

This term, we will be following the White Rose Scheme of Learning. We will be learning about number and place value, addition and subtraction, and multiplication and division. Our focus this term will be to encourage the children to independently problem-solve and to check their work for errors.

TIMES TABLES

By the end of Year 3, the children need to know their 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 10x and 11x tables. Each week, we will complete tasks that will support the children with learning their tables. The children will be tested each Friday on their times tables. Please support your children at home with learning these.

SPELLINGS

The children will receive a spelling list every Friday. The test will then take place the following Friday alongside a dictation to write out. Please help your child to learn their spellings at home. When you learn the spellings at home, encourage your child to put them in a sentence.

All children are now in our virtual classroom on Google Classroom. We are using this classroom to provide home learning resources both for homework and in the event of a school closure due to COVID-19. Please check it out with your child and get familiar with the layout.

Alongside daily reading, spellings and times tables practise we may occasionally send home extra work to complete which is linked to our learning in school. However, the priority this term will be reading, spelling and times tables practise at home.

PE

P.E will take place on Wednesday afternoons. Please ensure that your child has their full indoor and outdoor PE kits. A list of these can be found on our school website.
